Tēnā koutou e te whānau,
Welcome back to Term 2, this is a quick reminder newsletter of some events we have coming up.
Thank you to HoK, Emma and Coralie for the recent uniform sale. The Mothers Day shop is fast approaching, Monday 6 May, so please remember to drop off your donations to our school office. Our tamairki love having the independence to choose a gift for their Mums, thank you to our HoK volunteers for making this happen.
During Week 2 and 3 we will be celebrating two different non uniform days. Next Friday 10th May, we are celebrating Pink Shirt day early (the official day is 17th May). Tamariki can come with a touch of pink or as much pink as they can find! Pink Shirt Day is about working together to stop bullying by celebrating diversity and promoting kindness and inclusiveness. As a new KiVa school our lessons focus on diversity, kindness and inclusivity as these are proven ways of reducing bullying. We are looking forward to sharing the KiVa programme with you at our Parent Meeting on Monday 13th of May 6pm in the Library
Week 3 we will be celebrating the cultural diversity of our school as we prepare for our Pentecost liturgy at the end of the week. We have members of our community sharing their culture on Monday the 13th between 9:15-11:45am. We still have a few slots available if you’d like to come and share a special aspect of your culture with our tamariki. Please email cheryl.taylor@st-benedicts.school.nz if you would like to do so.
Did you know that you can view our newsletter in different languages? You can choose your preferred language at the top of the newsletter.
Our second non uniform day is Friday 17th May to acknowledge Penetecost which we celebrate on Sunday 19th May, the birthday of our church. Please send your tamariki in cultural dress, and/or colours that reflect your culture, and/or by bringing a special taonga/treasure that reflects your culture. Our Pentecost liturgy will be held at 9:15am at school on the same day and you are very welcome to join us.
Seasons for Growth
Tamariki and whānau support is available for those dealing with grief, loss and change in their whānau through the Seasons for Growth programme. We will be running the tamariki programme in conjunction with Challenge 2000 in Term 4. The below video gives a preview of the programme. If you'd like to register interest in your tamaiti/tamariki attending this wonderful course please complete this form.
Mā te Atua koutou e manaaki,
May God bless and care for you.

Save Khandallah Pool
The Summer Pool may be closed for good. We need your help to save it
There is a very real chance that this summer will be the last summer that our families will be able to enjoy the beautiful Khandallah Summer Pool.
We need the council to know how much we value and love this unique community asset. You can do this by encouraging your children to write a letter or poem, draw a picture or send a photo of them enjoying the pool and showing why it is so special to them and can’t be closed. These can be dropped to the school office or into the collection box at the Khandallah Town Hall before Friday 22nd March.
We encourage you to sign the petition Save the Khandallah Summer Pool from-Closure , and keep updated via our Facebook Page https://www.facebook.com/

2024 Construction St Ben's
Living with building work is never easy, especially when we are a fully operational school. The team from Freear Philip are committed to supporting us as best they can. However there will be some disruption as we move through the stages.
Each fortnight I will give you an update as to how the work is going. This will include how we are adapting our playground and places we use in Khandallah to support our tamariki through this.
![](https://stbenedictsnz.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/1576/cladding_replacement_.jpg)
Our current works are focused on fixing the cladding and skylights in the highlighted area. The retaining wall behind Room 7 and the classrooms in the photo will be rebuilt. A new deck and staircase will be installed and we expect the work to be completed by Term 4.
![](https://stbenedictsnz.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/1577/steps_and_fencing.jpg)
NEXT WEEKEND the removal of outside staircase and installation of temporary stairs to Room 7 and temporary fire exit from top block down to the turf. This is to enable access to rebuild the retaining wall behind Room 7.
The temporary staircase will be in operation until the end of Term 3.
![](https://stbenedictsnz.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/1580/storage.jpg)
The port-a-loo will move to within this fencing and all construction vehicles will park within the compound. A traffic management plan will be implement to ensure that vehicles are not moving around when our tamariki are on the move.
![](https://stbenedictsnz.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/1578/stage_1_fence.jpg)
March 4 fencing will be around the new staircase and top the edge of the library towards Room 6.
![](https://stbenedictsnz.schoolzineplus.com/_file/media/1579/stage_2.jpg)
March 11-19 fencing will be moving to cover 60% of turf. Large trucks will be coming in and out to support the building of the retaining wall. Mid-term 2 we will hopefully have only 40% of the turf out of use.
Stage three will start Mid Term 2 and include work on our Library, with the skylights coming out and the side wall facing Room 6 being recladed. We are still working through how we will adapt to this change with the teachers and others who use that space such as our HoK committee.
We do know that:
After School Care will operate out of one of our classrooms on the middle floor.
There will only be enough space to check books out – not for library visits. That will be out of action until mid-Term 3. We will explore visiting Khandallah Library as an alternative.
Assemblies are likely to go on hold while the library is out of action.
We hope to have fully operational library by the beginning of Term 4 at the latest.

Northern Suburbs netball have also asked for support filling the below roles
Northern Suburbs Netball (NSN) is looking for enthusiastic and organised volunteers for two crucial roles:
- Chairperson – NSN is run by a committee of volunteers and representatives from our participating schools. Together, the volunteer committee oversees the running and management of the club. The role is a rewarding one, and would be ideal for anyone wanting to step up and show some leadership in a very safe and supportive environment. The main time commitments are during terms two and three, and there is an amazing committee working beside them every step of the way. Generally, committee meetings are held once a month. And, most other business is done via email.
Please do consider whether you have the passion, energy and time for this vital role. If we do not have a Chair, we do not have a club and cannot run our netball programme. - Years 1 & 2 Programme Co-ordinator role. Years 1 & 2 participate in FutureFERNS Programme. The focus for this age group is on ‘exploring’ netball. It allows players to catch, pass, and shoot from day one, providing a fun introduction to netball. They have a 25-minute skill season, followed by a 2 x 10 min game, with a 3-minute half time break. They play on Saturday afternoon.
As the co-ordinator you would manage the administration, communication, and run the 8 sessions.
For further information, or to apply for either of these vital roles, please email Lisa at
secretary@nsnetball.co.nz

School uniform sale and chair bag sales
Thank you to those who participated in the January second hand uniform sale (especially Chystal O’Connor for running it), we raised $1,149. A big thank you to Bri Treder who paints and organises the school chair bags and to the Year 8 students who will be helping sew the chair bags going forward. Chair bags are a small fundraiser for HOK and are a big hit with their recipients.
AGM and upcoming special meeting
HOK welcomes new members Bri Treder and Kate Allen! We are holding a ‘special’ AGM on 11 March, 7.30pm in the school library to discuss a potential change to the “HOK” name and to confirm a change in our operating rules so that School Board members who are also on HOK do not vote on Board funding requests. New members are welcome any time, so please get in touch.
We are looking for a new Treasurer -
Are you comfortable with internet banking and reconciling transactions? If so, this is the job for you. Our current Treasurer will stay on to support you in the role which likely takes about an hour of your time each month. Ideally you will be able to make our Sunday or Monday meetings twice a term, but you are not required to attend or volunteer at our events unless you want too. No finance experience is required, and full training will be provided.
Feedback welcome!
We encourage and welcome feedback on these events, the associated spending of fundraising and anything else you think we could be doing to add value to St Ben’s and our amazing community.
Please contact Sarah: sarah.garty@hotmail.com on anything HOK related.

Jina performs at Parliament
Luner New Year
I was excited when I went there because it was my first time inside the Parliament. I did a dance performance on Luner New Year. It was like the greatest and important show in the World even more important than my other shows because it feels to me that Luner New Year is important. Melissa Lee is the MP (Member of Parliament) and Christopher Luxon is the PM (Prime Minister). I was so happy because not everone can meet the MP or PM. I did a dance by using the fans with my friend and the song is called Arirang. The Arirang song is Korean meaning song, so it is important. The really good and lucky thing is I got three lucky money. Jax and Natalie enjoy summer reading
Wellington City Libraries ran a summer reading adventure between 1 December and 31 January. Jax read 60 books during that period and came second among users registered to Khandallah library and Natalie placed third. Jax also reviewed 40 books. For his reading and reviewing work he received 3 Ben and Jerry ice cream vouchers, a book, a stationery item and a $15 Unity book voucher. He is very happy with the result and the prizes and recommends that everyone partcipate next summer. Well done Jax.
