Tēnā koutou e te whānau ō Hato Penetika,
Next week, you will receive your tamariki action plan reports, which will focus on Religious Education, English and Mathematics. These reports will also include a general comment on how your child’s year has progressed so far. If a goal was set during the whānau meetings at the beginning of the year, you will receive an update on that as well.
As you may know, this is the first year we are implementing a new curriculum document—English up to Year 6 and Mathematics up to Year 8. The Ministry of Education is currently consulting with school leaders and communities on draft descriptors that will support consistent reporting across all schools and kura. These descriptors aim to provide a shared language for reporting and help kaiako assess student progress against the new curriculum expectations. However, they are still in development and not yet ready for use.
We continue to use a range of standardised tests to support teacher judgment. These assessment providers are also in the process of revising their reporting frameworks to better support parent understanding of the results. However, these updated reports are not yet available. Your tamaiti teacher will have any standardised test results available to view and discuss with you at the upcoming parent-teacher interviews in Term 3.
We also want to acknowledge that our professional development in Mathematics only began at the end of last term, with our second session taking place this week. The remaining sessions are scheduled for early next year. In addition, eight of our teachers working with Years 4–8 are currently undertaking training in structured literacy through the Better Start programme.
Given that we do not yet have clear guidance on the new reporting requirements, we will continue using our current report templates. To support your understanding, we have added a band that explains the learning phase and how year-level attainment fits within it. As always, we will indicate whether your child is working at the expected year level.
In Term 3, there will be follow-up interviews, Tuesday 15th and Thursday 17th July 3pm-6pm, where you will have the opportunity to discuss the report in more detail with your tamaiti teacher. The interview slots will open next Thursday.
Once we receive further guidance, we look forward to working with our community to redesign our reports. Our goal is to ensure they are meaningful for our tamariki, manageable for our staff and informative for our whānau.
If you have any questions or feedback, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me.
Matariki Invitation
Our school and community will celebrate Matariki 2025 on the afternoon of Wednesday, June 18th from 3:30-5:30pm. This event aims to:
- Gather us together to express gratitude for the year just passed,
- Provide a meaningful learning experience about Matariki through shared food (kai), song (waiata), and time together (te wā kotahi).
After school, two activities will be offered: painting a Matariki-themed stone (one per family/whānau) for our new turf garden, and learning actions for a waiata we will sing together later. Additionally, each classroom will have created a poster or activity about one of the nine Matariki stars, which will be displayed (locations TBC) for families to view and learn from. Our Kapa Haka group will perform haka and waiata, building up to singing the waiata learned earlier all together – kotahitanga.
The event will conclude with everyone sharing pre-prepared Matariki soup and a roll (soup prepared the day beforehand from whānau donation), followed by well wishes for a safe and blessed Matariki weekend.
Mā te Atua koutou e manaaki,
May God bless and care for you.
