School Board Elections
A reminder that nominations for our upcoming school board election close on 6 August. We have 3 vacancies to fill. For those still thinking about standing, there's some helpful information available here:
Our Presiding Chair, Johanna has shared her experience of being on the St Ben's board:
I've never really seen myself as a committee kind of person. That said, it always felt inevitable I’d end up on one. Growing up, I remember my mum going to board meetings in the evenings and both my parents pitching in to support the school. I just assumed being on a committee or going to working bees was part of being a parent.
I was initially unsure about the time commitment of being on the board. At the time I was approached to join the board I felt like all I did was look after other people, and work. I feared that saying yes to one more thing or 'giving something back' would mean that there'd be nothing left for me, or I'd let people down by overcommitting.
But, like most volunteering, you tend to get more out of it than you put in. It's been refreshing to do something quite different from work, family and my own immediate concerns. Since I joined the board I’ve learned a lot about how primary schools run, and the scope school boards have to make decisions on behalf of their school community. I've found the board to be a friendly group of people. I've especially enjoyed working with others I wouldn’t usually cross paths with in my professional life. So far the time commitment has been manageable, mainly because the board works efficiently., especially when everyone contributes and shares the load. Meetings are rarely dull. While they follow the same structure, the discussions are always different because of the mix of issues and the varied perspectives and backgrounds among board members. One thing the board members have in common is to set aside their own children's concerns and consider the school as a whole.
So if you have few spare hours per month - please consider standing as a parent rep.
If you know all about NZ or are new to the country - we need you! If you're a potter, banker, musician, student, stay-at-home parent, lawyer, policy analyst, comedian or influencer - we need you!
Your key qualification for standing as a parent rep is being a parent of a St Ben's child (both committee-types and not-really-committee types of people are very welcome).
